Face-book Beacons do not seem to bother most people but what does bother people is advertising on Facebook. Facebook fans enjoy the interaction they get with each other and are not looking to go shopping while they are communicating with their family and friends.

I really like the way you have broken down the "six mechanisms to co-operate with businesses."

When social media sites first came out there was very little way to measure their impact and ROI on business. More and more tools are now available, like Polls as you mentioned.

Social media sites are great to build a community, answer questions, generate new ideas, etc. But I haven't seen many clear examples where their effectiveness has been linked to increasing sales.

Granted, this is early on. And I'm sure more sites will figure out how to achieve this. But so far, most research, including that from Forrester Consulting suggests that Social Media traffic doesn't convert well and can't be attributed directly to sales - which is really the heart of all businesses.
