Karsten joins the military

Please excuse my tendency for sensational headlines. Currently the British rain has invaded Cambridge. It’s the soft trickle that all cyclist enjoy so much because it wets all clothes. The city of Cambridge was filled with shoppers and incoming students, so I fled it as quickly as possible and went home to install the Internet connection on my laptop.

Back to headline: last night we had our first (informal) meeting of the new students of International Relations at Fort St. George Pub. About ten students were present, some Americans, some British students and some from other countries in Europe and the World. Interestingly some of the British students are distinguished gentlemen which already had a long career in the British Military. They have families and sometimes children and I think they will add a valuable perspective in our classes, so I look forward to join them in the debates.

I went to visit the Undergraduate Jerwood Library of Trinity Hall, open 24hours and situated next to the Cam-River. It’s probably a nice spot for learning. I went there with my bike but I had the problem that driving on the right side was still rooted in my biker’s bones. A couple of times when somebody else came headlong, I tried to swerve to the right, the other cyclist was swerving to the left and we barely avoided an unpleasant tete-a-tete.

Other than that I discovered after running around this morning that the local supermarkets, which include an ALDI-discounter don’t open before 9am and close at 7pm. In the country of Margret Thatcher and weak unions, I was surprised to see that supermarket opening times were almost like in Germany ten years ago. That is why I have to go already, to grab something to eat before the supermarket closes. Stay tuned.
