Questions concerning the G8

The Model G8 Team asked me to give a small presentation about the G8 summit procedures to intensify the knowledge.

We came up with a list of question that I will try to answer next monday. I already gave a presentation on the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, but this one will focus more on the G8 summit in Heiligendamm.

If you are interested to join the discussion, please come to the Politikfabrik, Monday 29th of January, 8.30 pm. These are the questions:

  1. Participants
    • What role has Angela Merkel at the summit?
    • How do the Sherpas support the Head of States / Head of Government?
    • Are representatives of NGOs or corporations present?
    • Are institutions like the IMF and World Bank present?
  2. Decision-Making Process
    • Who decides upon the agenda for the G8 summit?
    • How does a typical G8 year look like?
    • How are the G8 summits prepared?
    • Is the G8 summit only a symbolic act because negotiations between the governments continously take place between the G8 governments?
    • Which institution is the main coordinating instution on the Federal level?
    • How many people work in the German G8 team?
    • How many people work in each instution, ministry, or chancellor’s office on the G8 programm?
    • Which effects do the G8 summits have for national policies?
  3. Negotiations
    • How do the negotations take place?
    • What is a typical daily schedule of a G8 Summit?
    • What is the programm before and after the negotiations during the summit?
    • Is there a scientific coordination or support for the programme?
    • Are there any formal requirements?
    • Is a G8 summit more comparable to a heated argument or informal talks near the fireplace?
    • What is actually decided?
  4. Topics
    • How can initiatives for Africa really change something in Africa?
    • Which results are expected for the topic of Energy?
    • How do global economic inequilibria affect the G8 summit?
    • What is the problem of high currency reserves in Asia, low growth in the EU or the trade deficit of the USA?
    • What are Hedge Funds and why is more transparency needed? Is the initiative likely to succeed?
    • How much does the summit cost?
