J8 and Model G8 – what is the difference?

This week two things happened at the same time: firstly, a call for application for the ModelG8 arrived, secondly new website of the J8 was started by the German Unicef Office in cooperation with Morgan Stanley.

Now what are the main differences between the ModelG8 and the J7?

Well, let’s look first at the main similiarities? Both initiatives want to make the negotiations of the G8 more transparent and get young people to discuss the G8 politics.

The J8 primarily wants to attract school students between the age of 13 and 17. The whole event is not organized by young people, but for young people and as far as I know partially sponsored by the governments. The J8 takes place at the same time as the real G8 summit.

The Model G8 aims at attracting university students between the age of 18 to 27. It is organized by students and sponsored by private institutions and corporations. The organizers decide upon the programme and participants. The Model G8 takes place in May, several weeks before the real G8 summit.
