LoveToLead – Blogging for laptops?
Recently I received an email from Sylwia Presley inviting me to the website LoveToLead. Apparently this website wants to invite bloggers to discuss a particur topic and then rank each other.
What I like about the email – and that’s why I signed up to hear more about it – that Sylwia tried to personalize the email. I think and hope that it was not a mass email send out to bloggers. Apparently only one blogger in the UK (Paul Linford) has received a similar message (see Google Search). And in Germany, even the usually most informed blogger Robert Basic has not written about it yet, even though the issue of hunting bloggers with laptops is not an uncontroversial one.
There is also always the question of gathering email-adresses without giving more details. Maybe these are just used for spam?
Nevertheless, I like the idea of the blogger discussion focussing on one particular issue. It just depends on the questions being asked and whether blogger can provide their own suggestions for questions.
Dear Karsten,
First of all let me wish you very Happy New Year 2007!
I have really enjoyed reading your blog. It is great blog and very enjoyable. I see you are sharing a lot of important ideas on digital times, politics, and media with great audience,a nd out of that not only students I suppose!
That is why I would like to let you know about our new project called Love To Lead which will be launching in early January 2007, hoping you would be interested in sharing your ideas about it with me. I hope you will be interested in gaining new audience for your blog through this project as well.
L2L’s aim is to encourage debate between influential bloggers on a range of challenging issues. A new topic will be posted every week and we are asking bloggers to submit posts either arguing for or against. Visitors will be given the chance to vote for submissions and the blogger who receives the most votes each week will win a Toshiba laptop worth £2000/€2990/$3922. Voters will also be placed in a draw to win one of these laptops.
This email is just a chance for me to let you know what is going to be happening and that we would like you to be involved. If you think you might be interested in taking part or have any questions then please let me know. I will be in touch with more details in the New Year. The website URL is http://www.lovetolead.info
Best Regards,Sylwia Presley

Just posted the blog and suddenly found the GoogleAd for LoveToLead at the article. I wonder who is behind LoveToLead?

The Student Zone also posted an article on Lovetolead.
It clarifies some of the aims of the site:

[...] Oh, Toshiba discovered the bloggers. And at the same time, they have a new laptop that they want to sell. So what to do? First, thing of a cool slogan. Laptops – love, Web2.0 – to, Sell – lead. Lovetolead. Great. Then get a marketing-agency to create a nice new website in black. Get some interns to send emails to bloggers. Think about some strange questions. Especially about planets. Everybody loves that. [...]

[...] I personally hope that the site regains some attraction again – and I want to sincerely apologize to everybody who felt obstacled by my actions. I had three aims: raise awareness for the needs of bloggers, point to conceptual flaws and explore the mechanisms of social and virtual networks. Nothing more, nothing less. Here’s what happened: About three weeks ago, I was contacted by Lovetolead. I thought the site was a good idea, but when I saw the implementation, I was a litte bit more skeptic: [...]
